TODAY's GUEST IS HASARD LEE!
Today’s guest is Hasard Lee!
Today is a little different, I wanted to chat to Hasard about his stunning new book ‘ The Art of Clear Thinking’. A normal, full indepth interview will follow later in the year.
Hasard is an F-35 fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He’s flown over 1,000 hours in the F-16, including 82 combat missions. He is a mission commander and is the only fighter pilot in history to fly two different types of jets into combat on the same day.
Based on a career of making high-stakes, split-second decisions as an elite U.S. fighter pilot, The Art of Clear Thinking teaches readers how to make better decisions in everyday life.
The training to become a fighter pilot is among the most competitive and difficult in the world with less one-in-a-thousand succeeding. Pushing a cutting-edge jet to its limits at over 1,000 mph means that every split-second decision can have catastrophic consequences. This extreme environment has forged a group of warriors who for the last 50 years have been considered at the apex of decision-making theory and practice.
In ‘The Art of Clear Thinking’ Hasard distills what he’s learned during his career flying some of the Air Force’s most advanced aircraft. Through riveting storytelling—both from his time as a fighter pilot and fascinating turning point throughout history—Hasard relates to the audience in a compelling and accessible way that makes the book as entertaining as it is useful.
Hasard has used and taught these decision-making techniques across the full spectrum of human endeavor and proved their effectiveness both in the cockpit and the boardroom. Those who have already benefited include CEO’s, astronauts, CIA agents, students, parents, and many others. The Art of Clear Thinking is a book that will change how you interact with the world around you.

KEY POINTS, Links & Actions
Here are some key points that I would advise you to concentrate on
- Good decision making can be the key to whether a mission succeeds or not.
- There is a fine line between confidence ego in a pilot, ‘Maverick’ is a film character! “… people people assume fighter pots are are arrogant from from some of the movies. But I would say confidence comes from within, arrogance is how you’re trying to project that to other people around you so confidence comes from preparation.” You need to believe in yourself, in your ability to succeed but remain vigiliant of the risks and problems ahead, showing them due respect, but not letting the fear of them hold you back.
- You need to make decisions when required, when you are hungry or tired or horny or depressed. Challenge your decision making, by pushing yourself out of the comfort zone, take up a martial art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is a game of 3d chess cognitively while tiring physically like you are trying to sprint a marathon. Challenge yourself to make better decisions when tired, stressed etc. Make the decision and then debrief with yourself, a coach etc, and look at what went right and what went wrong, how can you improve for next time?
- Hasard and the other pilots spend a lot of time debriefing after their flights and missions to look at what went right and what went wrong, and how they can improve their skills as an operator. “…we’ll debrief for 2 6 hours really focusing on everything that we did wrong how to correct it. We’ll sometimes listen to the same radio call 15 times just trying to figure out what we can do better the next time”. Now how can you use a debrief after performance to improve your skills and level up for the next session.
- ” … if you don’t know where you’re going. You’re not going to be able to plan it well so that’s the first thing” – You need to work out what your overall goal is and then reverse engineer back to work out the steps you need to do to achieve that goal. Without an overall goal and aim, you cannot track your progress and truly succeed.
- Hasard utilizes visualization and positive self-talk in his training, so he can remain positive and in the present moment, being proactive and dealing with the current threat and not worrying about a mistake etc. Use meditation and other cognitive enhancing tools to eliminate the noise in your head, so you can make decisions and think straight when it matters most.
- It is OK not to know everything, and work with others to fill in knowledge gaps, plan out your training and plan your missions, Hasard mentions “…we are planning these missions so these missions are sometimes planned days months even years before we actually go and fly a mission and so as fighter pods we’re leading the mission planning process we’re having dozens sometimes hundreds of people coming together all to line towards this goal of overall mission success” – how can you bring together experts and coaches to help you improve and have a better chance of overall success?
- “So first is preparation you you can’t shortcut preparation. You don’t rise to the level of your expectation you fall to the level of your preparation. So. You need to be training extremely hard. You need to be training for missions that are more advanced and more difficult than what you’re going to actually do in combat.” Remember you fall to the level of your training, you do not rise to the level required by the situation.
- We all make mistakes, it is envitable. However, you cannot let it dictate your performance, or take your cognitive train off the tracks and crash into the land of despair. Hasard teaches his students to be mentally resilient, to notice and accept mistakes, return their focus on the task in hand and then deal with mistakes to resolve them and avoid them in the future during the debrief. How can you build your resilience to stay in the moment, and not dwell on mistakes?
- Hasard explains the snowball effect of dwelling on mistakes by explaining “So 1 important job of mine is to be able to help them to be mentally resilient mentally tough because if you make a mistake you don’t want to be focusing on that mistake. That’s. Burning cognitive bandwidth that you could be using to get yourself out of that mistake but a lot of students don’t know that and they’ll focus and they’ll kick themselves and think they’re going to fail the ride and then they’ll snowball and they’ll continue to make poor decisions so that’s about staying in the present moment understanding how the mind works” and that you need to “focus on what’s urgent instead of important”.
- You need to work on your skills to make decisions in real time as well as planning and strategist your performance. You need an overall plan of action, for training and performance, but also have the creativity and confidence to adapt as things change or go wrong.
- Create a human performance plan for yourself, analyse your diet, your sleep, your hydration etc, look at every part of your life and figure out how you can improve each part of the whole, so by improving the sum of the parts you level up the whole. Aim for 1% in some area of your life each day.
- Create a dedicated time in your day to debrief, even by yourself. Consider what worked and look to make systems and processes to make these work for you. Look at what didn’t, how can you fix these to be better for next time, or change things so you can tackle the problem from another route?
- We live in a time of opportunity and potential, by improving your decision making, you can take advantage of situations you may not have been aware of previously, to get a better job, a rise, a new skill, a new partner, an opportunity that you would have missed before. Every day has thousands of opportunities to improve your decision making skills, so how are you going to do it? With Hasard’s book and real time fun!
