KEY POINTS, Links & Actions
Here are some key points that I would advise you to concentrate on
- There are many variations of martial arts, and you can find the one that works for you!
- Training in martial arts can be life-changing for a person, it can bring about a high level of confidence for you.
- Competing in a martial arts is like a physical chess game.
- Cognitive enhancement is just as important in martial arts, is the physical development.
- Typically, a Muay Thai training camp, lasts six weeks for Taylor.
- Most fight game plans don’t last past the first contact with the opponent. Taylor focuses on her skills and game, and goes into each fight just trying her best.
- Taylor works hard in training, pushing herself to the point of exhaustion, and continually challenging herself, to develop her cardio, ability to deal with stress and uncomfortable positions and learn to keep faith in herself and abilities to not panic, and work out of bad situations and back to her game and strengths.
- Taylor has confidence in her training partners and coach, so she can discuss how she is feeling and aask for adjustments in her training as she and her body is feeling. This approach works well, as you can amend the workload and pressures as you can adapt your training to suit what you can deal with it at the time, keeping your ability to train going and not have a bad session.
Taylor has a unique approach to going from normal life to competing … she is herself. She doesn’t change anything. She looks forward to it, and uses the nerves and butterflies, to push herself on and enjoy something she has been training for it.
“to be completely honest with you. It’s never going to stop being a struggle. It’s always going to struggle and I think if you’re not Struggling. You’re not learning. Um every single day I go in you know there’s something that I’m uncomfortable with or something that you know I don’t feel super confident doing I’m struggling with but. At the end of that day. You can go ‘Okay, this is what I struggled with this is what I need to work on’ and you know overcoming those things is the beauty of it all. But I think the struggle is part of the process.”
- You need to find that balance between ego and worry, calmness and anger, to be present and aggressive, calm and relaxed and present in the moment.
- Having belief in your ability is key to success in martial arts; as Taylor mentions, you are in competition only with yourself and doing what you love. Stop comparing yourselves to others, and focus on becoming a better person and fighter at each session.
- You cannot do it alone, Taylor has a great support network of family and friends, and treats her training partners and coaches as her family too. By having a network of people to train with, to joke and laugh with, and discuss worries with, she has an accountability focus, people to keep motivating her and supports when she needs it.
- You need to make mistakes, practice and learn in training to win in competitions.
- You need to love what you do, to truly reach a new level. It is obvious how much Taylor loves her training and sport, and her enthusiasm pushes her to further and further success in life.
- Taylor’s coach lets her work on her style of fighting, by encouraging and making suggestions. He let’s her find her own style and provides help growing the tools she needs to grow as a fighter, and as a person.
I would just say the biggest you know I guess pro that my crew has given me and my team specifically it’s just that mental toughness and that’s what it comes down to no matter what you do you can go run for I mean 4 hours but you don’t have that mental toughness then you know you’ve already lost the fight. It’s almost like you’re fighting yourself pretty much if you already believe that you’ve lost and you know you’re never going to win so um, something that we really work on is persevering. You know not giving up and again. Making the worst of it in the training so that when we get to these events we get to these you know title fights we get to these big shows. It’s like you’ve gone to the worst now just do what you love. It’s all a really, it comes down to doing what we love and I feel horrible for you know. Athletes and you know I’ve been even there I think every athlete has where you know they’re just like shit this sucks like I don’t like getting hit in the face like this shit hurts all the day on time. Um, but it really comes down to hey this is my passion. This is what I love to do and if I don’t love to do it. Why am I doing it right.
Taylor looks forward to her nerves, she enjoys the nerves, the feeling of fear, and loves it as part of the journey. The fear will always be there, it never goes, it is part of the caveman response to keep you safe. However, you can’t let it dictate your life and stop you doing the things you want to do (obviously risk assessing it etc first). A few people I have interviewed have mentioned how they make friends with their fear, give it a name, so they acknowledge it and make peace with it being there like with a friend. Then when fear arises but it is something they want to do, they speak to it, they say thank you for being there, I appreciate you looking out for me but this is something I want to do, and the fear slowly dissipates and lessens as you come to terms with it and act anyway, and don’t lose your future by present displeasure.
- Taylor is taking each training session and fight at a time. She is doing the sport until she no longer loves the sport. This is a great approach to sports and life. Martial arts are great to develop you mentally and physically but they should be fun. When it stops being fun, go and try something new. You are not stuck, you can try new things at any age. Life is about growing and trying new things.
- Taylor evaluates her training and takes a break when she needs to. She has learnt that sometimes she needs to step back when things are stalling, or not going the way she needs. She learnt it is OK to take a break as you need it. It felt weird at first, but she realised she needs it, she needs time to relax and recover. You don’t need to grind 24/7 to succeed. You can take a break, stop, restart and whatever else you need. Your path is unique, stop trying to keep up with everyone else. Follow your own path.
- Taylor utilized therapy and talked to someone to help with her worries, confidence and understanding of fighting and life. Asking for help is a powerful thing, to be open, honest and vulnerable can the thing that lets you shine a light on a dark part of yourself, and fix a limitation and problem you have in life.
- You don’t need to train with unsafe people, people who go too hard or too rough – like you don’t need to be friends with users, or energy suckers. Until you go pro, or own the company, don’t take it too serious, we all die in the end in this life!
- A loss in a training round or competition means nothing in terms of your value. You learn and grow as a fighter and a person each time. Treat mistakes and losses as a way to learn and grow, not a valuation of you as a person.
LEVEL UP Time WITH THIS KEY LESSON!
You can go, ‘Okay, this is what I struggled with this is what I need to work on’ and you know overcoming those things is the beauty of it all. But I think the struggle is part of the process.”
Stop trying to be the best every day, look to improve yourself each day and enjoy the journey towards success and self-develoment and not the destination, the journey itself is where all the fun and growth is.
