THE GUEST

Today’s guest is Alvin Law.

In the early ’60s, over 13,000 babies around the world were born with deformities as a direct result of the use of Thalidomide – a drug prescribed to relieve morning sickness but had horrendous side-effects on developing fetuses. Alvin Law was one of them. In his case, just a couple of the tiny pills were enough to cause him to be born without arms.

However, there’s more to Keynote Speaker Alvin Law than what’s missing. He is living proof that removing the word ‘can’t from your vocabulary is something to which we can all aspire. Alvin’s adoptive parents raised him to not just survive, but to exceed expectations; it was a natural and essential part of their culture at home. Alvin took, what to some may have been a life hindering part of his development and instead made it a message of hope, motivation, and lust for life.

And that’s the message Alvin ultimately brings – to look beyond what you think is possible, past what you think is missing, and dream big. To do more. To be more. The only true obstacle, after all, is the labels we have accepted and allowed to define our lives – the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and the people and situations around us. Most of the time these labels are lies and created by ourselves, and we need to overcome the BS. He is living proof that removing the word ‘can’t from your vocabulary is something to which we can all aspire. He has played a direct role in raising over $225,000,000.00 for charity.

In this interview, we discuss his story, how he learned to use his toes for everyday uses, finding true confidence, overcoming limitations to achieve your dreams, and not allowing labels to define us.

KEY POINTS TO REFLECT ON & LINKS MENTIONED

In this interview, a lot of jewels of self-improvement are discussed. Some of these and their associated thoughts include:

  • You may have had challenges in the past, but your future is not set yet, you can make it what you want it to be.
  • Change your label – labels do not define who you are as a person. Being called fat or ugly or whatever it is from others isn’t who you are as a person – you can define who you are as a person.
  • Alvin may not have arms but his parents taught him to use his toes as arms to perform the actions he needed to be completed. You need to learn to control the controllable – forget he uncontrollable and learn to use the resources and skills you have. Develop them, expand them where possible to achieve what you want in life. Top performers understand that they cannot control everything and won’t try to, they just use their skillset and abilities to dominate and utilise their abilities and goals and what they can control.
  • “You are one of a kind, never ever sell yourself out, because there will only ever be one of you, just be you, be authentic and live your life”
  • There is no such thing as normal, the world needs our uniqueness, our stories and what we can contribute to make the world a better place. Everybody can contribute and make the world better in some shape or form.
  • You can be born with physical limitations, but the only limitations that matter are the limitations that you put on yourself.
  • Like Leah Shutkever said in her interview, someone will always be attracted you for your greatest flaws, there is plenty of people out there who will love you for you.
  • Doing things gives you self-esteem not born from stuff. It is born from failure and success. It gives us our courage, dignity and can do attitude.
  • Character does not come from our physical form, it comes from who we are in our soul
  • Insecurity drives us to do stupid things in our life – how we feel needs to come from a deeper place, a place of value of being comfortable in our own skin, not a shallow jealousy of what others have. The best gift you can give yourself is loving who you are as a person.
  • Alvin learn to acknowledge his difference. How could you learn to accept and be proud of what makes you different to others?
  • You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Make sure the average is high by spending time with life loving, happy and supportive people.
  • Lewis Howes
  • Tim Ferriss
  • Joe Rogan
  • The only thing separately the top performers to the average performers, is the individual effort you put into your practice, play and work. Talent without hard work will only take you so far.
  • Our uniqueness does not prevent us doing what we want to do, we can find a solution to the limitation or disability. Our uniqueness makes us unique, different to the masses, how boring would the world be if we were all the same.
  • You get out what you put in – in life, relationships and friendships
  • If you feel like you are missing something in your life, then Alvin recommends you should volunteer
  • Do not look at challenges as obstacles, look at them as possibilities, a chance to learn, develop, grow and become better in some way
  • You change the world a person at a time. What can you do to make things better with another person today, how can you improve things and connect with one another, to improve the world a little bit at a time?
  • What is your gift, what do you love to do or are great at doing? Can you use it to help others, or make the world better a person at a time?

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
