KEY POINTS, Links & Actions

Here are some key points that I would advise you to concentrate on:

  • Mess in the house can be a good indicator of poor mental health.
  • You can reduce your stress by organising your house and reducing the clutter, giving every place a home and a use.
  • We tend to hold onto items, not for the actual potential use of the item, but more for the emotional attachment and the story about the item or what it means to us.
  • Letting go of items, helps you let go of thoughts, feelings, and stress, so by letting go of things, you let go of the hold that they hold over you.
  • Amber found that meditation really helped her deal with her anxiety, and by clearing out her items, they let her deal with the associated thoughts. By then tackling the items and the thoughts, she could start to grow as a person and become happier in herself.
  • Sadly we live in a society where we think that our value is held in items, and what we own, and not in the value of who we are as a person. No item can can give you love, you need to learn yourself, not buy more.
  • A change in your habitat can really help you change your thinking and feeling.
  • Anyone can become organised and deal with their mess, you just need to find a strategy that works for you.
  • Meditation as a habit, allows you to understand and let your thoughts come and go, without needing to react to them, reducing stress anxiety and recurring thoughts. Headspace is a great app to try.
  • Book mentioned: ‘The Surrender Experiment’ by Michael Singer
  • Letting go, both physically and cognitively, can finally let you become centered and in the moment.
  • We tend to feel stress and embaressment about our homes and any mess within. However, the joy of Amber’s podcast and FB group are that, you realise that you are not alone, we all struggle to various levels. The podcast and group, helps highlight what people struggle with, suggests tried and tested methods, encourage one another, setup accountability partners and so much more.
  • A whiteboard has been one of the best purchases that I have made. A small one, installed on my wall, lets me add thoughts, tasks, reminders etc, and ticking off the work required, helps me feel in control and organised. Whenever something comes up, it goes on my whiteboard, and I build a fix from there, and rejoice in the ticking off the list, it feels fantastic! A great whiteboard to try is this one with this accessory pack and these magnets for post-its etc!
  • Our homes should be a place of peace, relaxation and enjoyment. A difficult discussion with your partner, about setting up cleaning routines, organising rooms and so on, can be a small pain you need to pay a lot of peace and tranquility at home. We don’t all see things the same way, we don’t all see clutter the same, or if it is clutter etc. Communication is key to getting on the same level in a relationship.
  • “Okay, so the way to do that is to simplify it as much as possible. Instead of thinking, oh, I need to sell that, or I need to move that to the kitchen, oh, my daughter might want that, like too many questions. You need two questions. So when you’re working with a very messy space, one question. Stay or go. Stay or go. That’s it. That’s it. Stay or go. And then later on, we’ll worry about where it’s going to go if it stays, where it’s going to go if it goes.”

  • There is a big difference between demonstrating your personality and mess or clutter. There is a big difference between keeping things as a feeling, and just hoarding! One item is enough as a reminder. Don’t hold onto your past, keep growing and evolving as yourself.
  • Holding items as you think you might use them, is not helpful, they are costing you space, time, money and creating stress!
  • Start decluttering small. Pick one thing in each room to chuck out/donate to charity/ get tailored etc. Aim for one thing in each room only. You can easily do more, but doing one thing, achieves it, so you can stop if you really want to, but most people tend to feel motivated and use the momentum to do one more, then another … and then another. It’s a great tip for the gym as well. If you aren’t feeling it, aim for one set, go in and do it. If you feel like more, great do more. If you don’t, then go home. Most feel the motivation and do more. Remove the stress you put on yourself to do it all, start small and build up.
  • Stop keeping things to think we will use it in the future. The ‘future’ you are planning will rarely come, it just keeps you messy, stressed and feeling anxious. Live for now, and keep things that you use for now, you can get stuff for new things as you grown. Get rid of things to remove the stress, emotions, feelings etc holding you back in that place that you want and need to grow out of.
  • Each morning, make your bed. That is one small, simple job that you can do each morning that takes no time, to straighten the pillows and put the duvet on correctly. However, this simple action, helps you start your day with an accomplishment, and this motivates you to do another, and then another and so on. Start small, build from the momentum of ticking off the small jobs and build up.
  • Book mentioned: Boundary Boss by Terry Cole
  • You can’t change others, to make them cleaner but you can clean and organise for you. Others will see and be inspired and take part on a level that works for them. You can’t play the victim, you need to do it for you, and inspire others, and let it inspire them to change.
  • “the biggest thing is gonna be for you to have a moment to yourself. So I i would i would want them to close their eyes, First, find like a peaceful spot where you’re not going to be interrupted by any animals, any children, any people. just We’re talking like two minutes. Everybody can do this. And just to stop and pause and to feel their feel gravity pulling you towards the earth and feel the contact of wherever your body is meeting the surface that you’re touching, standing, sitting on, whatever. And then to take a deep breath and feel your lungs fill up. And then feel your body really relax. And then, once you do that, open your eyes As if it’s a brand new, you’re seeing everything for the first time. And then you will, I can almost promise you, you will make whatever environment you come in contact with a little better. Like because you’re going to feel not chaotic inside and you are going to, you’re not even probably going to think about it. You’re going to just go over and you’re going to like put a dish in the dishwasher or you’re going to, you know, like you’re going to do something that will reflect this peaceful state that you just found inside you. And I mean, maybe you’ll like,Maybe you’ll declutter your whole garage. I don’t know, but that is what I would want to leave people with is, is to, to first change your internal state. Cause that only takes two minutes or less. And then you will find that you are, you have so much more power over your external state.”

LEVEL UP Time WITH THIS KEY LESSON!

You don’t need to get rid of everything to get in control. Start small. Build on your momentum. Take photos of items, you can feel the emotions by looking at the photos, but getting rid of the item, helps you create space, organisation and puts you in control. Reduce the number of items to get control eg plastic containers (5 instead of 1o, you still have some to use but not take over your kitchen!). Remove the emotion, remove the control, remove the stories and hold the items have over you. Take control. Start small and build the home that you want and need!

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!
