Is Masterclass worth the money?
Please note, this review will be be revised repeatedly as I work through the MasterClass and have insights to share.
What is it?
‘MasterClass offers online classes created for students of all skill levels. Our instructors are the best in the world.’
For this review, I was sent a complimentary class to review by Masterclass. The class that I chose to review was ‘Wayne Gretzky Teaches the Athlete’s Mindset – Masterclass’.
The video below is a wee teaser on what is available:
How could I use it?
An example of how you can use it from one of their marketing emails.

How can I use it?Masterclass offer a series of applications that you can use to access the classes whereever you are. There are applications that you can use on your laptop, mobile or cell phones, tablets, or TV. If you can access the internet on it, you can probably access the Masterclasses on it!
|
How long is it?
Classes are varied in overall length.
In terms of the videos in each class, some topic videos last around 5 – 10 minutes.
How much is it?
MasterClass costs
- $180 for its annual subscription
- Or $15 a month, which gives you unlimited access to all its classes until you cancel your subscription.
Is it a good value for money to take a subscription? I think so. The cost per month is the price of a couple of coffees from a coffee shop. And for that price, you get access to all classes. I would happily go without a few coffees that last minutes, to learn life-changing skills that could increase my own skills, worth to a company, salary etc.
Where do I get it from?

What do I get for the money?
You receive a class on how to improve a particular area of your life, such as your competitive mindset, basketball-playing, understanding of space etc.
Each class is broken down into a series of videos on different areas, which allow you to learn in short, sharp blocks.
You are provided with a workbook to work on in each class. The production value of each is mind-blowing!
In addition to this, there is a community forum to be used for each class. Here, you can start or join in discussions on points you have discovered during the class and discussions on how you can apply these to your own life.
Some of the amazing people to learn from
Pros
- You get key tactics, procedures, rituals and hacks from some of the top performers in the world such as James Cameron, Stephan Curry, Gordon Ramsay, Serena Williams, Alicia Keys, Ru Paul, Jimmy Chin, Wayne Gretzky.
- You can stream the videos easily whenever is convenient for you. If you have ten minutes while waiting, you can load up a video and learn where ever you are.
- The production quality of each video is very high, the quality of the video is great, and the sound is too.
- Each video offers captions for those who may struggle with their hearing ability.
- The videos are not rushed through.
- There is an online notepad for you to take notes as you watch the videos.
- You can learn at a pace that is right for you and your other commitments.
- You get to learn from a series of experts who would normally not be available to learn from outwith a programme like this.
- The video quality is very good and high quality.
- If you are driving, going for a run etc, where youi can’t watch but want to learn, you can switch on the audio only mode to listen like an audio book.
Cons
- There is only a limited number of courses in most areas – more will come but at the moment, choice isn’t great in some areas. However, when I look at similar companies, Masterclass has the best lineup by far.
- You need to watch your data use if using the videos on your mobile/cell phone and you do not have an unlimited data plan. In that case, you should use free wifi hot points where possible.
- There is a good range of classes, but not many in each different area, so there isn’t a great variety of mindset training ones, or basketball coaching, or space education for example, but the classes are being added to regularly.
- Some of the personal stories are interesting but are a bit slow to get through at times, but they do help you understand the point they are trying to make … in my opinion.
- Audio mode (to turn the video into an audio book style) is only available on IOS right now.
Verdict
I really enjoyed it. The ability to pick things up whenever you wanted, and learn using any device, was really useful. The videos are highly detailed, very well explained and there is such a wide range of topics offered as classes. This would make a great gift to others as well as yourself. With the threat of further lock downs, you can still learn from the greats uninterrupted as the resources are available for you whenever and wherever you want them!
Where else could you get a chance to learn from Metallica, Gordon Ramsay, Steph Curry and so many other legends of their respective sports! I think this is a must use tool for anyone serious about improving themselves and their skills, and would be a great gift to receive.

About the Author
I’m a podcaster who interviews great examples of people to discuss and highlight the methods, hacks, tips and procedures you can use in your own life to help you develop and better your life. I would definitely not consider myself an expert, so to improve, I ask them and action it in my own life! My personal journey has been marked by awkwardness and awesomeness, OCD and ‘OMG’. I have suffered with depression, shyness, unhappiness and lack of focus and motivation so I know what’s it like to feel lost and hopeless. Back then, I wished I had a podcast to listen to and find actual fixes and concrete action steps and not just unobtainable suggestions and promotion of their products but couldn’t find it … so I made my own!-
